About us

Archangel Michael & St. Mena Coptic Orthodox Church was established in Staten Island, NY in 1982 AD by Late Hegomen Fr. Wissa Bessada.  The church is part of the NYNE Diocese: 
The Diocese was officially established in 2013 by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II. The foundation of the Diocese was planted in the mid-1970s when numerous Coptic families emigrated to the United States from Egypt under the leadership and guidance of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, the time came in 2013 for the official establishment of a Diocese under the auspices of His Grace Bishop David.
His Grace Bishop David was consecrated in formal ceremonies taking place in Cairo, Egypt on November 16-17, 2013. Bishop David was formally enthroned on December 7, 2013 at the Coptic Orthodox Church of St. Abraam in Woodbury, Long Island in a ceremony that brought together thousands of the Coptic faithful, clergy, and dignitaries.

  1. Hegomen Antonios Attia
    Fr. Antonios was ordained to serve in the Church of Virgin Mary in Maady, Egypt. He moved to the United States of America and started to help with the services of the Church under the guidance of Late Fr. Wissa. Later His Grace Bishop David moved him to serve permanently in the church
  2. Hegomen Samuel Boulos
    Fr. Samuel graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor degree in Computer Science. He was ordained a priest by His Holiness Late Pope Shenouda III on November 17th of 2004. Later he was elevated to the Hegomen Rank by His Grace Bishop David on May of 2014
  3. Fr. Peter Dimyan
    Father Peter was born on April 21st, 1983 in Elizabeth, NJ. He was baptized and raised at St George’s Church in Brooklyn, NY at the hands of the Very Reverend Father, Hegumen Mina Yanni. Father Peter was ordained as a Psaltor at the hands of His Holiness, the Late Pope Shenouda III, Reader at the hands of Bishop Suriel, and Sub-Deacon at the hands of Bishop David. Father Peter served the Youth, Deacons, and Pre-servants while at St George’s Church. Father Peter was married in 2010 to Lydia Dimyan, and has 2 children- Ethan Augustine and David Cyril Dimyan. Father Peter also served for a brief time at St Anianus’ Coptic Church in Princeton, NJ, at the time of its inception, under the guidance of the Reverend Father Michael Sorial. Father Peter served the Diaconate ministry while also serving on the Church Board Father Peter graduated with a Civil Engineering Degree from the City College of New York and began his career working as a heavy construction consultant/inspector with AECOM. Father Peter later became a Construction Manager with Tishman/AECOM and worked on the rebuilding of the One World Trade Center Building. Father Peter was called to the Priesthood and was ordained on May 10, 2014 at the hands of Bishop David. Father Peter enjoys the honor of becoming the first ordained Presbyter after the inception of the newly formed Diocese of New York and New England. Father Peter is currently a Masters student at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary and enjoys focusing primarily on the youth ministry in his Church and the Diocese.
  4. Late Hegomen Wissa Bessada
    Father Wissa Bessada is the founder of Archangel Michael & St. Mena Coptic Church in Staten Island. Father Wissa Bessada was ordained on 7-23-1976 by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III to serve at The Great Morkosia Church, (Azbakia, Egypt.) Fr. Wissa was called to serve at Saint Louis, Missouri (USA) on 12-16-1979. After that, he started serving Staten ​Island on 12-03-1980 and there was no Church at that time on the Island. The first Liturgy was held on 1-6-1981 and was attended by a total of 25 people at St Sylvester Church on Targee St where they rented. On 1993 and through the grace of God and Fr. Wissa’s service the congregation was able to purchase an existing building on January 1993. Fr. Wissa continued to serve the people of Staten Island and by October 2004 construction of the current church as an extension to the existing building started. The church was consecrated on 2-4-2007, and shortly after, Fr. Wissa was promoted to the next and last rank of priesthood (Hegomen) on 2-6-2007. He departed to our Lord Jesus Christ on April 28, 2013 after serving 33 years in Staten Island.
  5. Deacon Mina Aziz
    As the Church grew even more, His Grace Bishop David ordained Deacon Mina Aziz as a Deacon for the Church on August 2nd, 2015. Deacon Mina is responsible for all the Diaconate services including the needy support in the church.
